The Importance Of A Pet's Health

There are plenty of pet owners who take their pet for granted especially when it concerns the health of the pet. Pets cannot tell their owners what they are feeling so there is no way to communicate the illness that is bothering them. As a responsible pet owner, one would have to carefully monitor their pet for any sign of being sick.

Zoonoses in the Bedroom

Pet owners who value their pets as family members are not real happy with the findings in a research paper released in the February 2011 issue of The Journal of the Centers for Disease Control Emerging Infectious Diseases. According to the article titled "Zoonoses in the Bedroom", written by Bruno B. Chomel, DVM, PhD; and Ben Sun, DVM, MPVM, it is possible that sleeping with pets may carry some serious health risks.

Being medical terminology challenged I had to look up Zoonoses and the medical definition is a disease communicable from animals to humans under natural conditions. So that helps with the understanding of the big problem and all the news coverage. There are several news articles available from Aol News, Chicago Now, Chicago Sun-Times, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, msmbc.com, just to name a few.

In the United States, 60% of households have pets. According to a survey of pet owners by the American Pet Products Association, nearly half of dogs sleep in their owner's beds. The survey found that 62% of small dogs, 41% of medium-sized dogs and 32% of large dogs sleep with their owners. Women were more likely than men to allow the dogs in bed (25% to 16%) according to a press release on January 30, 2006 by AKC. We are a pet loving society!

Healthy pets can carry bacteria, parasites and other microorganisms that can make us sick, as most pet owners know. Chomel and Sun surveyed some fairly extreme cases, including a 9 year-old boy who contracted the plague from fleas infesting his cat and a man who allowed his dog to lick a surgical wound from a hip replacement, and as a result contracted meningitis.

To say pet owners are unhappy is an understatement! Why all the news coverage? It's not like we don't have common sense. We know to help prevent getting infected by a pet it is essential to observe good hygiene and prudent animal care. We use safe veterinarian prescribed flea control products to prevent flea borne diseases. And we know to use extra precautions handling pets around the very young, the elderly and the immune-compromised.

As for me and my household, we will exercise common sense and continue to cuddle with our furry companion.

Pet Pic iPhone App

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. Smart phones are so much fun. One of the nicest things about having an iPhone is that you can snap pics and share them on the web immediately. And they take pretty decent quality pictures. But if you've ever found yourself trying to snap a good picture of Rover using your iPhone, you know how tricky it can be to hold the phone and snap the picture while trying to get your dog's attention.

Rafael Gaino to the rescue. Pet Pic, by Punk Opera, is a pretty cool iPhone app for those of us with pets. He wrote the app to help him take pictures of his dog and now anyone with an iPhone can capture better photos of their dogs, too.

It's a simple concept really, we've all tried holding up a toy or a treat to get our pet's attention when taking photos and that's what this app does. It makes sounds, grabbing your dogs attention and leaving you and your hands free for snapping the perfect pet pic. The latest version of Pet Pic now plays the sounds automatically and includes squeaky toy sounds.

The app is affordable ($0.99) and it looks like loads of fun. We'd love to give it a test run but aren't able to since we all have Android phones. So, we're looking for someone who would be willing to give it a test drive and report back. We'll give you a promo code to install the app on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. If you're interested, leave us a comment below and let us know what device you'll be testing on. We'll choose at least 3 testers and only require a short email review along with a photo in return.
Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 4.2 or later

Upload cuter canine photos to Facebook or Twitter or your blog using your iPhone with Pet Pic by Punk Opera.

Adopting an Older Dog?

Here's What You Need to Know!

There are times when you inherit an older dog, accidentally or otherwise. Some may be strays you rescue from the street, others may be dogs whose owners cannot take care of them for some reason or the other, and yet others may be those you bring home from the pound. However they come into your life, looking after older dogs is a different experience from taking care of puppies. There is a tremendous need for adopting older dogs as most would opt for the puppy. You can experience much pleasure when you save an older dog from the alternative. In general, here's what you need to know when it comes to taking care of your adopted older dog:

• If you think it's going to be easier looking after an older dog when compared to taking care of a puppy, you're mistaken. While you may not have to housebreak them, you do have to spend time and effort in training them to obey your commands and accept your authority.
• It's actually harder to train an older dog, especially if their previous owner has not trained them properly or had a different method of training.
• Some dogs may have been abused by their previous owners, and if you're bringing home one of these, you may have to work overtime to earn their trust and win them over with your kindness and attention.
• If you're taking home a stray from the streets, ensure that no one is looking for the animal first. Then take the dog to your vet and get him/her thoroughly checked out to see if they're in good health. You may also have to spay/ neuter them.
• While older dogs may not be as destructive as puppies who chew up everything in sight when they're teething, some dogs may exhibit uncharacteristic or unacceptable behavior which you need to change – stealing food from your dining table, destroying your property, and similar others.
• Older dogs that have been trained are more suitable companions for the elderly and those who don't have the energy to keep up with an exuberant puppy because they're more sedate and laid back.
• If you're open to an older dog, you could even find purebreds at affordable prizes.
• And finally, if you're worried about having to re-train an older dog, don't stress too much – it can be done with just a little effort and a lot of love.

Before you bring your dog home, have him/her checked out by your vet or check the dog's health records for illnesses, vaccination history, if they are available and make sure they have been neutered or spayed.
